In Jackson, Mississippi, in the early morning hours of June 26, 2011, a 47-year-old African-American man – James Craig Anderson – was severely beaten and then intentionally run over with a pickup truck in an unprovoked attack by a group of white teenagers from nearby suburbs. Some of the teens yelled racial epithets during this horrific incident, a random act of hate crime violence that resulted in Anderson’s death.
After leaving the scene, Deryl Dedmon boasted about beating and running Anderson over, while using racial slurs, saying "I ran that nigger over" to the accomplices in the other Jeep. Law enforcement officials indicated that Dedmon repeated that statement with the racial slur in subsequent conversations.

Deryl Dedmon was
eighteen years old when he murdered a man with his truck because of
the color of his skin in Mississippi. According to court documents, Deryl and two other men were driving around when they saw the
victim in a motel parking lot. The trio would jump out of the truck
and proceeded to beat the victim. Deryl would go back in his
truck and run over the victim.
When this teen killer was arrested he would admit to police the only reason why they targeted the victim was the color of his skin. Deryl Dedmon would be convicted of the murder and hate crime charges.1
At present, Deryl is serving his sentence at Federal Correctional Institution, Otisville. He is likely to be eligible for release in the year 2054.
