MAX
SCHMELING. Heavyweight champion and symbol of Nordic superiority.
Even his never-used middle name, Siegfried, suggested to the Germans the
invincible Teutonic power that lurked in his muscles. Schmeling was
born in Klein Luckow, Uckermark on September 28, 1905. On June 30,
1930, at 24, he won the world's heavyweight championship from Jack
Sharkey. But his greatest victory came after he had lost the
championship back to Sharkey. But in a disputed "we wuz robbed"
decision. On June 19, 1936 Schmeling knocked out Joe Louis, the Brown
Bomber, who had never lost a fight. It was a stunning victory that
delighted Hitler and provided ammunition for the Nazi beliefs in a
superior race. Louis went on to win the world's championship but longed
for a return bout with Schmeling. "I can never really be champion
until I beat him," he said. Louis got the return bout and in two
minutes and four seconds of the first round battered his German opponent
into unconsciousness.
Schmeling
enlisted in the German air force on the outbreak of World War II. On
May 20, 1941 he was one of the daring parachutists who participated in
the campaign for Crete, in which he was seriously wounded. After the
war Schmeling won great popularity as an amiable retired athlete in both
Germany and the United States. ( From "Leaders and Personalities of
