The Murder

• Heather shot her neighbor to death while he was on the phone talking to a 911 dispatcher.
• The fatal shooting was a result of a dispute between the two over Hamby loaning Young money over a two-year period, then withholding Young's Suboxone pills from her. Suboxone is used to treat opiate addiction. According to Young, she said Hamby had demanded to hold a large portion of her pills as ransom to try and get repayment for the loans.
• The shooting occurred in Hamby's home on Summers Hill Road in Sunbright.
• Hamby told a dispatcher shortly after 9am June 25 that he'd been shot twice by Young.
• A gunshot is audible on the 911 recording played to jurors, and Hamby tells the dispatcher he had been shot again. Two more shots ring out on the recording, and Hamby isn't heard again.
• Young was carrying towels and a .22-caliber handgun when police apprehended her as she was leaving Hamby's house.
• On the witness stand, Young testified she had been in a romantic relationship with Hamby and that she loved him.¹
• Hamby suffered four gunshot wounds. One bullet traveled from the cheek into the neck and spine, fractured two vertebrae, damaged the spinal cord, and tore two major blood vessels. Due to blood loss and the damage to the spinal cord, this shot was fatal and caused a rapid death. The second wound likely occurred when Hamby was bent over, that the bullet traveled from the left side of the chest into the abdomen and damaged the stomach, spleen, left kidney, colon and large bowel. The third bullet entered the left thigh close to the groin and traveled to the left buttock. The fourth bullet entered the back, traveled through the diaphragm, bruised the lungs, damaged the stomach, and traveled toward the rib cage. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was homicide.
• Heather Young, 35, was convicted by a Morgan County jury of killing Memford Hamby, 60, on June 25, 2008.
• She was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
