Candace Craig was born in 1978 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Raised in a stable, two-parent household, she had access to quality education and opportunities. Margaret, known for her generosity and strength, had suffered a stroke and relied on Candace for care. In May 2023, Margaret discovered unauthorized transactions on her bank account, leading to a confrontation with Candace. Fearing exposure of her financial exploitation, Candace suffocated her mother with a trash bag on May 23, 2023. The following day, her daughter, Salia Hardy, found Margaret's body in a bin. Under Candace's direction, they attempted to burn the remains on a backyard grill, but neighbors noticed the fire, prompting intervention. Candace then dismembered the body with a chainsaw, storing the parts in trash bags in the basement. On June 2, 2023, police conducted a welfare check and discovered the gruesome scene, leading to Candace's arrest.​

Candace was charged with first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and unauthorized disposal of a body. Her trial in November 2024 revealed chilling details, including her attempts to blame her daughters for the crime. The jury found her guilty on all counts. In February 2025, she was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Judge Karen Mason highlighted the absence of mitigating factors in Candace's background, emphasizing the heinous nature of her actions. Salia Hardy, who testified against her mother, received five years of supervised probation due to her cooperation and developmental challenges.​

The murder of Margaret Craig shocked the community, revealing the dark potential of familial betrayal. Margaret, a beloved figure, was mourned by many. The case underscored the need for vigilance in elder care and the importance of addressing financial exploitation within families. Candace Craig remains incarcerated, with no prospects for release, serving as a grim reminder of the consequences of unchecked greed and violence.​
