Emma Huver, a 26-year-old resident of Lansing, Michigan, has been involved in a legal case concerning the tragic accidental shooting death of her two-year-old child. Emma Huver pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm as a felon. On October 24, 2023, a firearm was discharged in Huver's car, leading to the accidental death of her child. Huver had a prior felony drug offense conviction from 2020. Her sentencing is scheduled for September 16, 2024. She faces charges including involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse related to the incident. Two other individuals, Avis Coward and Gina Schieberl, are charged with conspiracy to tamper with evidence and tampering with evidence in connection with the case.
The tragic incident involving Emma Huver's child occurred when Avis Coward, who was also in the car, left the vehicle to go inside a gas station. Avis Coward: Charged with conspiracy to tamper with evidence and tampering with evidence. Additionally charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. After the shooting, Coward was seen on surveillance video picking up the gun that fell out of the car and breaking out the front passenger window, which had the bullet hole, before driving away.
The tampering charges relate to attempts to hide or destroy evidence, including the car, which was later found burned-out and abandoned in a field in Lansing.
Gina Schieberl: Charged with conspiracy to tamper with evidence. Admitted to moving the car in which the child was shot, to prevent police from finding and examining it. Schieberl also set the car on fire after moving it. Gina Schieberl admitted to moving the car to a different location and then setting it on fire. This act was an attempt to destroy evidence related to the shooting. The car was later found burned-out and abandoned in a field in Lansing, which led to the charges of conspiracy to tamper with evidence against Schieberl and Coward.
The video from the gas station captured the moments before and after the shooting, including the child accessing the gun and the aftermath of the accidental discharge. A purple 9mm Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol was identified as the weapon in the car at the time of the shooting. Emma Huver admitted to having this firearm, which was illegal due to her status as a felon. The car, which was later found burned-out and abandoned in a field in Lansing, and a .45 caliber Springfield Armory semi-automatic pistol, the barrel of which was found disassembled and hidden in the wall of a house in Lansing, were part of the tampered evidence.
