He initiated a FaceTime call with Watson and her father, Curtis Watson, forcing them to witness the assault on Zevaya. Prosecutors later described how Flanagan struck Zevaya with and against a blunt object and choked her to death. Screenshots from the FaceTime call revealed the child's swollen eyes and bloodied mouth, depicting the extent of her injuries.

The chase concluded with a standoff involving a SWAT team, after which Flanagan was apprehended. Zevaya was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Flanagan was charged with capital murder (a murder that can be punished by death, considered the most serious type of murder) in connection with his daughter's death. Initially, his bond was set at $1 million but was subsequently increased to $2 million during his first court appearance. The trial commenced in January 2025, where the jury was presented with harrowing evidence, including the FaceTime footage of the assault. After deliberations, Flanagan was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
