He stated that he struck Kjersem with a piece of firewood and then stabbed him in the neck with a screwdriver before hitting him in the face with the blunt side of an axe. Abbey also returned to the campsite after the murder under the pretense of retrieving his hat but ended up stealing additional items from Kjersem’s truck and disposing of two phones taken from Kjersem’s tent.

As a result of these actions and confessions, Daren Christopher Abbey has been formally charged with one count of deliberate homicide and two counts of tampering with or fabricating evidence. His bail was set at $1.5 million during his court appearance on November 1, 2024.
