The Murder

Police officers from the Milford Police Department were called to Jonathan Law High School (JHLS), 20 Lansdale Avenue, Milford, Connecticut, at around 7:10 am on Friday, April 25, 2014, in response to reports of an altercation at the school. Officer James Kiely of the Milford Police Department, a school resource officer assigned to JLHS, transmitted one of the reports from JLHS via radio to police headquarters. Officer Kiely is working a uniformed assignment where he handles tasks related to law enforcement.

Officer Kiely was on his way to the area of the school where the “altercation” had allegedly occurred when he received a call to the principal's office. There, he saw Christopher Plaskon with bloody hands and clothing. Officer Kiely, who is acquainted with Chris, inquired as to what transpired, and Chris responded, “I did it. Just arrest me.”

Officer Kiely was called to the victim's location by JLHS staff while he was with Chris in the principal's office. Officer Kiely put Chris in handcuffs and walked away. Officer Kiely then went to the scene of the assault and discovered that Maren Sanchez, the victim, was still there and in critical condition. Officer Kiely informed the responding police that a serious assault with a high risk of death had actually occurred at the school. The crime scene area was safeguarded and secured as police officers arrived at JLHS. Chris was arrested by the police, transported to a police sedan, and kept there under constant observation.

Maren Sanchez, a 16-year-old JLHS student, was identified as the victim. Maren was brutally attacked and left with severe wounds. Paramedics from the fire department and EMTs from American Medical Response (AMR) responded to JLHS and started providing the victim with emergency medical care. Maren was transferred to Bridgeport Hospital by AMR while receiving treatment. She was still receiving medical care at Bridgeport Hospital, but after numerous attempts to save her life were unsuccessful, doctors declared her dead.

Afterward, Maren was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Farmington, Connecticut, for an autopsy. The body underwent an autopsy on April 26, 2014, by James Gill, MD, of the OCME. Dr. Gill reported that stab wounds to Maren’s neck and trunk were the cause of death. According to Dr. Gill, homicide was the cause of death.ⁱ

Aftermath

The city of Milford agreed to pay $5 million to the family of Maren Sanchez. The Estate of Maren V. Sanchez reached the $5 million settlement with the city of Milford, resolving claims that the school district did not properly respond to threats posed by her killer. The lawsuit said that Maren had gone to her counselors to report her concerns about Chris’s behavior but that they failed to follow the Board of Education’s policy for dealing with students with potential for violent actions.
