On January 12, 2023,
a tractor-trailer driver named Danny G. Tiner caused a tragic
six-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near Chandler, Arizona. The
collision killed five persons, and Tiner was charged with several
charges of manslaughter and endangerment. After pleading guilty to
five charges of negligent homicide, he received a 22.5-year jail term
in August 2024.
Tiner was speeding at 68 mph in a 55 mph
construction zone because TikTok distracted him from paying
attention. He mentioned receiving a message on his electronic work
tablet before to the accident, but when he looked back, traffic had
stopped, and he was unable to stop his truck in time to prevent the
crash. During the investigation, it was discovered that Tiner was
using TikTok on his phone and driving at the time of the
collision.
The dangers of using a phone while driving
include fatalities, collisions, and injuries. In 2022, 3,308
individuals were killed in car accidents involving distracted
drivers, with 402 deaths attributed to cellphone use. Every year,
roughly 1.6 million crashes occur as a result of phone use while
driving, and drivers who text while driving are 23 times more likely
to be involved in a car collision. These figures emphasize the
dangers of distracted driving and the significance of remaining
attentive on the road. It reminds all drivers to prioritize safety
and avoid distractions while driving.
