Roy Norris letter/envelope 12/28/1996 DECEASED

This auction is for a letter from deceased California "Tool Box Killer" Roy Lewis Norris (2/5/1948 - 2/24/2020). Norris, with accomplice  Lawrence Sigmund Bittaker, committed a series of abductions, rapes, and torture murders from June 24, 1979 to October 31, 1979, killing five teenage girls. The moniker of "The Tool Box Killers" came due to the vast majority of the items used to torture and murder their victims were pulled from a tool box, kept in the windowless van the two used to commit their crimes. The duo would be apprehended separately on November 20, 1979. In the plea arrangement Norris would testify against Bittaker in order to escape the death penalty. On 5/7/1980 Norris was sentenced to 45 years to life in prison. During the later trial of Lawrence Bittaker, a homemade tape recording the two made of a woman being brutalized and raped was played for the jury. The victim would be identified as the fifth and final victim of both Bittaker and Norris. Bittaker would be convicted and sentenced to death for his roll in the crimes. When Norris became eligible for parole in 2010, he decided to decline having his parole hearing, believing he you had not paid his debt to society. Norris died of natural causes on 2/24/2020. He was 72.

ITEM DESCRIPTION: The missive is one page, dated 12/28/1996, and signed, "Roy L. Norris." On the reverse there's a Pelican Bay Inmate Canteen Price List. Norris has drawn a Happy New Year's theme on the envelope with Bart Simpson saying, "GAWD!! How embarrassing!!! Just anybody can draw me doing any danged thing!!!" The original mailing envelope is postmarked 1/7/1997. The letter and envelope come inside a protective magazine sleeve with an acid free board and have been stored flat.
