Description
This auction is a letter from California serial killer Herbert William Mullin. With a lethal mixture of untreated paranoid schizophrenia, firm beliefs in Catholicism, and repressed homosexuality, Mullin elected to kill at least 13 people residing in and around Santa Cruz, CA, in the early 1970's in order to prevent catastrophic earthquakes. You see, Mullin's birthday was on the same month and date of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. In his mind he believed his crimes would save the State of California. His method of murder varied, including a brutal stabbing death of a priest in a confessional at St. Mary's Church in Los Gatos on 11/2/1972. Mullin believed that Catholic priest wanted to be killed in order to stop a potential earthquake. Mullin believed this so much, at the time of his arrest on 2/13/1973, he assured is arresting officers that he had prevented major earthquakes with his murderous actions. If he was right we owe ol' Herb a debt of gratitude. However, at his trial his version of events couldn't be collaborated. On 8/19/1973 a jury convicted Mullin on 10 of 10 murder charges. Mullin would later plead guilty to an additional murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Mullin has proclaimed his rehabilitation and believes his debt to society has been paid. Unfortunately for Mullin the parole board hasn't agreed with him, denying both parole bids made by the serial killer. His last hearing, in 2011, resulted in a 10 year extension of his sentence.
ITEM DESCRIPTION: The missive is two pages on one sheet, dated 10/5/1996, and signed, "Herb." In the letter Mullin mentions his 1996 parole board denial, "Well, the parole board gave a five year denial. They encouraged me to keep up the good work. I will. I hope that some day I will be free and happy again!" The original mailing envelope is postmarked 10/7/1996. The letter and envelope come inside a protective magazine sleeve with an acid free board and have been stored flat. Message me with any questions you might have. Thanks for having a look-see.
