ARREST INFORMATION ON CARD: This particular arrest, which is not often talked about, was for possession of marijuana and takes place between to key events in the story of Charles Manson and his associates. As of June 1969, Spahn Ranch and the adjoining property, Kelly Ranch, belonged to Frank Retz. Retz wanted Manson and his companions off his property. On 8/16/1969 100 Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies would raid the Spahn Ranch, arresting Manson and 25 others in connection with a major metropolitan Los Angeles auto theft ring. Manson would be released from jail and to return to Spahn Ranch. On 8/24/1969, Manson and others would again be arrested at the property, this time for violation of California's Health and Safety Code 11530, marijuana possession. On 8/26/1969 Donald "Shorty" Shea was murdered. It's likely Shea's demise was the result of conversations overheard by Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme between Retz and George Spahn about hiring him as a "watchman" for the Spahn Ranch property.
