This auction is for a letter from South Carolina maternal filicide Mrs. Susan Leigh Vaughan-Smith. On 10/25/1994 Mrs. Smith drowned her two young sons buy rolling her car into a local lake with the two secured in their car seats. The case made national headlines when explanation for the missing children was a car jacking by an unknown African American male, only Smith to confess just over a week later that she killed her two children. On July 22, 1995 Smith was convicted on two counts of first degree murder and received a life sentence. She is eligible for parole after 30 years. Since her incarceration Smith has been a model prisoner, having two individual sexual relationships with South Carolina Department of Corrections Lieutenant Houston Cagle and Captain Alfred R. Rowe, Jr. Reports state the sexual relationships were discovered after complaints that correctional staff were physically abusing Smith. During an unclothed body evaluation Smith showed signs of a sexually transmitted disease. Testing later determined she was not pregnant. The South Carolina Department of Corrections denied the claims of abuse and no charges in relation to the allegations were ever filed.
ITEM DESCRIPTION: The completely handwritten missive is three pages on two sheets, dated 7/1/2004, and is signed, "Susan." The original mailing envelope is postmarked 7/2/2004 with seven lines of address written in Smith's hand.
